Hair’s always a mess, always writing songs…
In case you’re curious, my hair’s always been this wild. It’s probably because as a child, I spent about half my time swimming in Lake Erie, and the other half roaming the woods with my dog. And nearly all of that time I was also singing. This is extremely corny to say - but genuinely - I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t writing songs. The earliest lyrics I’ve found were written when I was 5. At 12 I was writing full-length songs and forcing my friends to learn them on the playground during recess. (Our band “The Sparks” never quite took off, but I still have high hopes.)
I didn’t seriously pick up an instrument to accompany my songs until the age of 15. My basketball coach had benched me, and I was so angry, that I decided to write a song on ukulele about it. That song was called True Grit. It’s named for a nickname my mom gave me as a child because I was stubborn as a mule. Unfortunately, writing songs did not get me a starting spot for basketball. I actually went on to be the least remarkable player in our school’s history and quit after that season. However, it did push me to start seriously writing again.
From then on, all of my spare time was spent writing. I was either getting my heart broken or singing about it to my friends. (Here’s some older stuff if you’re curious.) A year later I met a mentor and started co-writing. 2 years later, I started performing at a local venue. Rocky Point Winery let me take their stage and play original music for 2 hours every Thursday. I’ll forever be grateful to them. Soon enough, I was telling everyone who would listen that I planned on moving to Nashville, Tennessee after highschool to become a singer.
At the age of 18, my mother told me she’d happily support my dreams of moving to Nashville… after I went to college. So somewhat reluctantly, I took her advice, and in August 2018, I began classes at The Ohio State University. (Yes, I’m one of those. Go Bucks!) I had an amazing and life-changing 4 years. As it turns out, going to school only improved my writing and life experiences. (Please don’t tell my mom she was right- though she usually is.) In May of 2022, I graduated from Ohio State with a BSBA and a minor in Music Media and Enterprise. When it came time to move out of my college house, I only applied for jobs in one city. You’d never guess- Nashville, TN. I got a job, moved to a city I’d never visited in 3 weeks, and the rest is, well, present!
In the past year, I’ve been writing more than ever, playing everywhere I can, and working on putting music out. We’re putting the finishing touches on my debut E.P., and I’ve been recording every step of the process to show you behind the scenes. You can keep up with my gigs, projects, and whereabouts on Instagram & TikTok. If you’d really like to keep up, you can check out my vlogs on YouTube. I also post new songs and covers from time to time. I’d love to hear from you or talk music, so feel free to shoot me a DM or an email!
